Respect

Too Many Regulations Destroy All Respect For Law

If you have ten thousand regulations, you destroy all respect for the law.

Thought for Today: Members of a Great Family

Painting of Paris street scene with Eiffel Tower nearby

Values are related to each other as if they were members of a great family. From peace and happiness emerges inner joy. From this state of wholeness love awakens and with is the desire to share and give. Two of its relatives are tolerance and respect. All values have a shared origin which unites them — the peace of spirituality. When you lose peace you begin to lose everything.

The Artist's Way Every Day - April 10th

As artists, we have a different kind of accountability than many people. What pays us and pays off in the long run is really the caliber of our work. As artists, we have an inner Geiger counter and it ticks loud and clear when we are near pay dirt — first-rate, high-caliber ore that means we are working at the top of our form. Because this device is an inner one, it isn't easily fooled by the prestige of a certain venue or the lack of another. What it detects is quality. It knows the real thing when it is near it. This is what "accountability" is for an artist, the blunt assessment: Is it any good? It boils down to the simple fact that artists respect good art — and we respect ourselves when we make it.

Daily Reflection: Trust In Myself

Trust in myself breathes respect into my being.

Thought for Today: Bliss Of Self-Respect

Autumn leave colors in Porcupine Mountains Wildness Park in Michigan

Experience the bliss of Self-Respect and give respect to others at all times. When I am prejudiced against another, my narrow vision and small heart lower my self-dignity and self-worth.

National Tribute to Thomas Alva Edison

American inventor and genius Thomas Edison stands next to chemicals

The grief of every American in the passing of one of the great benefactors of humanity has manifested itself in the suggestion from hundreds of citizens that the Nation should join in a solemn tribute to the memory of Thomas Alva Edison.

In response to this universal desire to pay personal respect to Mr. Edison's memory, I suggest that all individuals should extinguish their lights for one minute on Wednesday evening, October 21, at 7 o'clock Pacific time, 8 o'clock mountain time, 9 o'clock central time and 10 o'clock eastern time. It is my understanding that the broadcasting companies will undertake a brief program in respect to Mr. Edison's memory at this moment.

The suggestion had been made that the electrical current at generating plants should be turned off at these hours, but on inquiry I find — and this is confirmed by Thomas Edison, Jr. — that this would constitute a great peril to life throughout the country because of the many services dependent upon electrical power in protection from fire, the operation of water supply, sanitation, elevators, operations in hospitals and the vast number of activities which, if halted even for an instant, would result in death somewhere in the country. It is not, therefore, advisable. This demonstration of the dependence of the country upon electrical current for its life and health is in itself a monument to Mr. Edison's genius.

Andy Rooney on Government Sponsored Research

Blonde glamour model Rhian Sugden poses wearing a white bikini top

The federal government has sponsored research that has produced a tomato that is perfect in every respect, except that you can't eat it. We should make every effort to make sure this disease, often referred to as 'progress', doesn't spread.

A Person of Your Own Respect

Blonde meditates in yoga pose on sandy beach shore

Don't listen to those who say, "You're taking too big a chance." Michelangelo would have painted the Sistine floor, and it would surely be rubbed out by today. Most important, don't listen when the little voice of fear inside you rears its ugly head and says. "They're all smarter than you out there. They're more talented, they're taller, blonder, prettier, luckier, and they have connections." I firmly believe that if you follow a path that interests you, not to the exclusion of love, sensitivity, and cooperation with others, but with the strength of conviction that you can move others by your own efforts, and do not make success or failure the criteria by which you live, the chances are you'll be a person worthy of your own respect.

Thought for Today: Family and Friends

It's often said that charity begins at home. So let me first give respect to my family and friends.

Nelson Mandela on Freedom

Professional golfer and model Blair O'Neal in blue dress

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 (1918 - )

Never Make Opinions of Others More Important Than Own

Sultry Australian brunette model Jessica Gomes with arms above head in bikini

Perhaps the greatest mistake we can make, which causes loss of self-respect, is making the opinions of others more important than our own opinion of ourselves. You'll find no shortage of opinions directed at you. If you allow them to undermine your self-respect, you're seeking the respect of others over your own, and you're abdicating yourself.

Thought for Today: Respect

Old railroad line disappears into lake showing lack of respect and neglect

Respect is never catching anyone out, never pulling at their shortcomings, so that they become a target for laughter. It means watching and nurturing strength and it is based on the awareness that everyone has value, because everyone is unique. It rests also on humility, because humility knows that what's visible in a fool is only a chapter in their whole story.

Set Your Expectations High

Block letters spell out the word T R U S T

Set your expectations high; find men and women whose integrity and values you respect; get their agreement on a course of action; and give them your ultimate trust.

Former Chairman and CEO of IBM Corporation (born 1934)

Thought for Today: A Fruit Tree In Season

Herd of elephants wanderin on a plain under purple sky with lightening

Generosity can be defined in many ways but respect, kindness, benefit and accessibility are its key characteristics. Generosity is like a fruit tree in season. All its fruit is available to anyone for the picking. When I am full, complete, when I have conquered selfish needs then I can be naturally generous. My being is open to others to share the best without any obligation.

Judges Should Not Bring Passionate Feelings To The Bench

Blonde model Katarina van Derham poses showing cleavage in a black sweater

I respect people who feel things passionately. I do. But when someone is a judge, that is not what they should bring to the bench. It is not really passion, except in rare instances, that serves the bench well. It is, rather, an ability to understand the law and follow it.

Thought for Today: Sign of Greatness

Two sailboats with full sails at sunset

Humility is the sign of greatness. To the extent that you are great, you are accordingly humble because you are constantly full. Just as a fully-laden tree would be bowing down, so, humility does service, and those who remain humble receive respect from everyone. No one gives respect to those who have arrogance; they run away from such a person. Wherever those who are humble go and whatever they do, they will always give happiness. Everyone will experience happiness from them.

Thought for Today: Respect The Unique Role

Respect is to recognise and appreciate the unique role of everyone. When I find myself having negative thoughts toward anyone, I need to look at the special role this person has to play. When I look closely, I will realise how talented they are, and will develop new respect for them. Without this particular person, the drama of life would not be complete.

Francis Balfour on Giving

British glamor model Keeley Hazell sits in chair in pink lingerie

The best thing to give your enemy is foregiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.
