Thought for Today: Lasting Happiness

Setting sunlight shines through the Crystal Palace in Madrid, Spain

The real reason why we sometimes experience a lack of real, deep lasting happiness in our lives is dependency. We are taught to make our happiness dependent on some event, condition, person, object etc. This is why we keep delaying our happiness until things are just right in our life. We think we will be happy in the future and then wonder why we are not happy now. But life is never just right, and the future never comes — there is only now! And that's why, in order to be happy we must make our happiness a decision and not a dependency. This may seem slightly difficult in the beginning, because we have just spent our life being dependent on acquiring something or someone, or seeing the result we desired, or wanting some pain to go away, before we allow ourselves to be happy.

Thought for Today: Comparison with Others

Comparing yourself with others will leave you vulnerable on three counts: you'll either feel inferior, superior or impressed. All three of these states are dangerous because they all disregard the underlying principle of our true connection with each other — mutual love and regard, based on independently generated self-esteem. To protect yourself from this vulnerability, make sure that your attention remains turned within, towards the spiritual experience of pure pride. Staying centred in your elevated self-respect will help you remain undisturbed by others around you. Keep asking yourself, "Who am I?" "How would my spiritual personality respond to this event or person?" this will help to centre you further, and allow you to enjoy the successful efforts of others.

Insight in and of itself is an intellectual comfort. Power in and of itself is a blind force that can destroy as easily as build. It is only when we consciously learn to link power and light that we begin to feel our rightful identities as creative beings. The Morning Pages allow us to forge this link. They provide us with a spiritual ham-radio set to contact the Creator Within. For this reason, the Morning Pages are a spiritual practice.

Thought for Today: Think Eternity

The tip of the Gaspe Peninsula in eastern Quebec, Canada

Life experiences are like sentences — we are always looking for the full stop, the conclusion. It’s OK to end a train of thought, but not thought itself. Thoughts are like the magic carpet, on which the soul rides across eternity — in reality, there are no endings, no conclusions. Rest for the spirit (which is what we are) is when we allow only the current of the purest thoughts to flow through our mind — thoughts which carry good wishes and blessings for ourselves and others. This is not so much going with the flow, as being in the flow, and refreshed by the flow. For when we have powerful, positive thoughts for and about others, who experiences them first?

Happiness Must Be Allowed To Grow

Brunette model Alyssa Miller in a red and black bikini

The art of living does not consist in preserving and clinging to a particular mode of happiness, but in allowing happiness to change its form without being disappointed by the change; happiness, like a child, must be allowed to grow up.

Thought for Today: Become Utterly Tranquil

High above the beach at Zakynthos, Greece

Being lost in thought, thinking about things to do, what’s been done, what could have been done… is not only tiring but also a brilliant way to waste energy. It diminishes your peacefulness and clouds your clarity. Every time you become lost in thought it means exactly that — you are lost! To find yourself, allow your mind to become quiet, to become utterly tranquil. In the quiet depths of every being, there is a stillness that contains a deep inner peace and wisdom that can guide you in your life.

I believe and know creativity to be a spiritual issue. "Faith moves mountains" — Christ told us that, and he may have meant it literally. We speak of the Great Creator, we speak of Christ but seldom make the connection that the spiritual laws he taught are actually the spiritual laws related to creativity. "Knock and it shall be opened." "Ask and you shall receive" — these are spiritual laws as they relate to manifestation. As artists, we routinely ask for inspiration. We need to learn from Christ's example that we can also ask for the material manifestation of our vision to come to use as money, support, opportunity. Our faith, which is a request coupled with an expectation of it successful fulfillment, is no different from the faith of a navigator setting out to prove the world is round. Creative dreams come to us as visions that we are charged with fulfilling. When we allow the Great Creator to do this to us, through us, then we are aligning ourselves with the spiritual power necessary to negate the "odds."

Morning Pages are meditation, a practice that brings you to your creativity and your creator God. In order to stay easily and happily creative, we need to stay spiritually centered. This is easier to do if we allow ourselves centering rituals. It is important that we devise these ourselves from the elements that feel holy and happy to us. A spiritual room or even a spiritual corner is an excellent way to do this. An artist's altar could prove a sensory experience. Burning incense while reading affirmation or writing them, lighting a candle, dancing to drum music, holding a smooth rock or listening to Gregorian chant — all of these tactile, physical techniques reinforce spiritual growth. We need to unlearn our old notion that spirituality and sensuality don't mix. We are meant to celebrate the good things of this earth.

In a sense, our creativity is none of our busines. It is a given, not something to be aspired to. It is not an invention of our ego. It is, instead, a natural function of our soul. We are intended to breathe and to live. We are intended to list and create. We do not need special pens. We do not need special rooms or even special times. What we do need is the intention to allow creativity to create through us. When we open ourselves to something or someone greater than ourselves working through us, we paradoxically open ourselves to our own greatest selves.

Thought for Today: Thinking In The Right Way

Winter view from Oxbow Bend toward the mountain peaks in Grand Teton NP

Everything depends on our thinking. If I think in the right way I will be light. If I think in a wasteful way, I'll be heavy. Waste thoughts are dangerous. They waste my time. They allow the past to come alive, then I forget the present and question the future.

Thought for Today: Busy People

The red light of a winter dawn above the peaks of Grand Tetons National Park

We live in the age of ‘busy’. Busy people not only do a lot, they think a lot. Being lost in thought, is not only tiring and a brilliant way of waste energy, it’s as if we have forgotten the very ground of our being which is still and silent. Learn to meditate and turn the eye of your attention and awareness within, let your mind be quiet and allow your being to be still. You will realize outer space is but a reflection of inner space. Both are vast and infinitely spacious.

The Artist's Way Every Day - October 2nd

Brunette model Rachael Neiberding is quite sexy on beach in blue bikini

It is all too easy an artist to allow the shape of our career to be dictated to us by others. We can so easily wait to be chosen. Such passivity invites despair. To remain healthy and vital, artists must stay proactive in their own behalf. Writers must write for the love of writing and not merely, or only, to fulfill a book contract. Actors must consciously choose ways to keep acting when they are not winning auditions. As an artist, I must be alert to keeping myself in effective training. Like a creative triathlete, I must take care to be well-rounded. I must take stock of my talents and take the time and care to try to use them fully.

Refuse To Throw In The Towel

When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.
