Holy

My Mother

Blonde model Nadege Dabrowski poses in a blue swimsuit at the seashore

This wonderful poem was published in the book The Taylors of Ongar by Doris Mary Armitage, Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons Ltd. , 1939. p. 181-182.

When sleep forsook my open eye,
Who was it sung sweet hushaby,
And rock'd me that I should not cry?
My Mother.

Who sat and watch'd my infant head,
When sleeping on my cradle bed,
And tears of sweet affection shed?
My Mother.

When pain and sickness made me cry,
Who gaz'd upon my heavy eye,
And wept, for fear that I should die?
My Mother.

Who drest my doll in clothes so gay,
And taught me pretty how to play,
And minded all I had to say?
My Mother.

Who ran to help me when I fell,
And would some pretty story tell,
Or kiss the place to make it well?
My Mother.

Who taught my infant lips to pray,
And love God's holy book and day,
And walk in wisdom's pleasant way?
My Mother.

For hearts that are kindly, with virtue and peace, and not seeking blindly a hoard to increase; for those who are grieving o'er life's sordid plan; for souls still believing in heaven and man; for homes that are lowly with love at the board; for things that are holy, I thank thee, O Lord!

The Artist's Way Every Day - January 19th

Morning Pages are meditation, a practice that brings you to your creativity and your creator God. In order to stay easily and happily creative, we need to stay spiritually centered. This is easier to do if we allow ourselves centering rituals. It is important that we devise these ourselves from the elements that feel holy and happy to us. A spiritual room or even a spiritual corner is an excellent way to do this. An artist's altar could prove a sensory experience. Burning incense while reading affirmation or writing them, lighting a candle, dancing to drum music, holding a smooth rock or listening to Gregorian chant — all of these tactile, physical techniques reinforce spiritual growth. We need to unlearn our old notion that spirituality and sensuality don't mix. We are meant to celebrate the good things of this earth.
