Despite rally back from early losses after the injury to star quarterback Tom Brady, the team finished the 2008 regular season with a record of 11-5. Sadly, though, for the first time since 1985, eleven wins was not sufficient for the team to qualify for the playoffs. Hence, for the first time in six years, the Patriots will be observers at playoff time rather than participants.

One has to wonder whether this crushing experience will spur the Patriots on to new heights next year. I can easily see Bill Bellichick using the 2008 season example as motivation that five losses is simply one too many. True, the Patriots suffered many year-ending injuries, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. However, something tells me that my favorite football team will continue its transition to youth and will come back in 2009 stronger than ever.

Good luck to those teams that are competing in this year’s playoffs!
